Common Greek Mountain Tea Sideritis of Lamiacea family is a flowering plant or herbal medicine gathered in Greece and mediterranean area in July. It is used as a tisane prepared by decoction : by boiling the stems, leaves and flowers in a pot of water. It is often served in Greece with honey and lemon. I only consume that kind of Green tea almost every day in winter. It is much better that toxic coffee. I like Sideritis sweet aroma… absolutely unique.

 

Sideritis mountain tea is found on rocky slopes at elevations over 1.000 m. These plants are adapted to survive with little water and little soil. Only one type of this plant, Sideritis raeseri, is cultivated only in Greece. Every summer, I collect Sideritis tea in the area I live, means on the Pilion mountain. I keep it dry till winter season in the house loft.

On Crete, Sideris common name for Mountain Tea is « Malotira » (scientific name Sideritis Syriaca). Almost every region of Greece has its own name for the brew, such as « Olympos tea » (Sideritis Scardica).  »Parnassos tea » or Sideritis raeseri reflects the name of the mountain where it grows. The most common English name for Greek Mountain Tea is « Shepherd’s Tea »  because Greek shepherds would use the plants to make a brewed tea.

This ancient herb is used as a therapeutic and beneficial tea with many health benefits. Active elements include diterpenoids, flavonoids and essential oils. Mountain Tea is enormously popular in Greece, and used most often in winter when levels of physical activity decrease and colds, aches, and pains increase but it is also
