How to make authentic traditional greek Horiatiki salad recipe with feta ?

Greek salad « Horiatiki » (Χωριάτικη σαλάτα in greek) is part of traditional authentic healthy Greek recipes but how to make authentic traditional greek salad with feta ? Nothing is more simple and original than a greek salad dressing with feta, the national greek white cheese. Lend a note of freshness to your daily meals reading my recipe of Greek salad.

Ingredients for a greek salad for 4 persons :  2 tomatoes, 1 small cucumber, 1 slice of greek feta cheese, 1 green bell pepper, 1 onion, 1 small cup of olive oil, four or eight olives, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and a pinch of oregan and salt.

How do you make a greek salad dressing ? Greek traditional salad as we make it in Greece is made with pieces of tomatoes and sliced cucumber, green pepper and onion. After having put together all these ingredients in a deep big plate, pour the vinegar onto the salad and add a pinch of salt. Then, lay down a large slice of feta and sprinkle the all thing with oregano but mostly on the feta. Finally, pour the olive oil out and there you have it ! A superb and very appetizing dish

Traditional Greek salad dressing is made from May to October included, on other words during summer time in Greece. Why making a greek salad and not another salad ? Because…

  • Traditional Greek salad is a very healthy food with very few calories in Greek salad. It consists of vegetables, olive and herbs. It is an ideal greek recipe for vegans and vegetarians but also for anybody desiring to be on a diet.

The nutrition facts of greek salad ingredients are very good for our health with many antioxidants, low fats, low cholesterol elements and many vitamins ! 
1) Tomatoe contains the carotene lycopene, one of the most powerful natural antioxidant (preventing cancer). They have double the normal vitamin C and 40 times normal vitamin A.
2) Cucumber is low in fat, cholesterol and Sodium and is also a good source of Vitamin A and C and minerals.
3) Green pepper contains the antioxidant lycopene and high amount of vitamin C (two times the 70 mg of an average orange).
4) Onion Most are high in vitamin C & B6. It is a good source of dietary fibre and it’s very low in fats.
5) Olives and olive oil is actually the best ingredient for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels (other coooking substitutes being bad for cholesterol). It is also a good source of Vitamin E
6) Oregano It is also a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Calcium and Iron.
7) Greek feta cheese is a  good source of Protein, calcium and Phosphorus but it has to be consumed  in moderation
