Where is Kasos ? Kasos is located 30 kms from Crete, southwest of Karpathos. It is the southermost island of the group of islands of the Dodecanese. The island is 65 km3 and includes 1.000 inhabitants. We can arrive on the island from Crete or from Karpathos. There is also a small local airport on Kasos island.
It is a mountainous and arid island with steep hills or a few beaches. The sea is turquoise and clear all around the island. You can go on the small island of Armathia with its lovely beach (photos below).
How to get to Kasos ? You can travel Kassos from Karpathos or from Crete but for more exciting trip, go to the island by ferry. The duration of the journey iss 1 1/2 hour.
Where to stay in Kasos ? At Kasos, I stayed in the Blue Sky apartments with my family. The apartments are very simple, at 150 meters from the port of Fri. From our apartment, we could see the sea. The beach, the shops and the restaurants are 100 m away.
The main village of the island is Fri. It is located at the edge of the beautiful harbour of Bouka (photo below on the left). Houses are built amphitheatrically on a slope of a hill going till the sea. The old stone houses were owned by captains of the merchant Greek navy of the 18th & 19th century.
Emporios village is the second largest village on the island. There is a beautiful church dedicated to the genesis of the Panayia (Virgin Mary in Greek).
Discover the other villages of Kasos. You can visit Ayia Marina 1 km away from Fri and go & see the village of Arvanitohori which lies in the unique valley of the island. You will also find the picturesque villages of Panayia and Poli. Near Poli, there is the monastery of St Mema. If you are on the island on July 17th in the evening at Ayia Marina, participate at the summer party « Ta Kassiotika ». Residents wish to wear the traditional clothing to dance.
The cave of Selaϊ it is certainly worth it. It is at 2kms away from Agia Marina. You will see the beautiful scenes of stalactites. The cave has is 30 meters deep and 8 meters wide. All around the cave, you can see the Pelasgians walls (lower photo).
History of Kasos: The first inhabitants of Kasos were the Phoenicians. According to Homer, the inhabitants of Kasos participated to the Trojan war. In the 18th century, the island built its own fleet and grow richer from developed trade. She got ivolved in the 1821 war of independence, but in 1824, Kasos is turned all burned by turco-Egyptian army and only a few of its inhabitants survived.
