Kythnos a beautiful island. Superb Kythnos Island. Which hotels should I chose on the island of Kythnos? What to see in Kythnos?. I’ll tell you everything…
Where is Kythnos? Kythnos is an island in the west side of the Cyclades Islands group. It is located 85 kms from Athens. We go to the island by ferry from Piraeus (duration of your journey: 2 h) or by ferry from Syros. Kythnos is 100 km2 and has approximately 1500 inhabitants. The island has 100 km of coast and more than 60 beaches! It is a wonderfully arid island with a pleasant climate embraced by northern winds. The island lives prosperously from tourism and its land: Fields of wheat and almonds, vineyards and production of figs and honey. There were iron mines on the island but they are now unexploited.
Hotels on the island of Kythnos? I went to the island with my family five years ago in September. We stayed at the Kontseta apartments in the port of Asma. This resort was great with a great view on the harbor and a great sunset every evening. Apart from this cheerful atmosphere, we can see that the complex is closed to everything (shops, taverns etc.) and just a few kilometers from the main villages of the island Chora and Dryopida. It is not far away from the beaches. I had made a good choice I think….
What to do in Kythnos? Therefore, there are two important villages Kythnos (or Chora) and Dryopida. These villages are picturesque with their narrow roads showing pacificand lovely scenes with white houses contrasting with blue windows.
Chora is the main village of the island, It was built in the 17th SC on the slopes of a hill. Chora has a different architecture than the one of Dryopida. Flat roofs with typical Cycladic terraces are seen everywhere here. Chora has a beautiful church, smaller ones (St Savvas, Metamorphosis of the Savior, Holy Trinity) and mills. There is a Byzantine museum (within the Church of St Georges). We can also find a eolian park there.
Dryopida is a traditional village with its particular architecture, its white houses covered with tiles. The ceramic flourished in this village long time ago. In this village, you can visit the folk Museum and the Byzantine Museum (in the Church of St Georges). We can also visit the Cave of Katafyki: one of the largest caves of Greece with stalactites and stalagmites (the cave is not completely accessible for the public…works continue to take place).
1. The village of Merichas with its nice little port. This village is located in the north-west of Kythnos, 8 km from Chora. You will see the Church of Panagia Flabourinis. North of Mèrichas, you can see the beautiful beaches of Episkopi and Apokroussa and, south of Merichas, you have thecalm beaches of Flabouria and St Dimitris. The island of St Loukas can be visited in the north of the village. And then, spend one day on the beach of Kolona is connected, via an amazing strip of land, to the little island near by Kythnos.
2. The village of Loutra. A nice village known for its springs of thermal water. The geothermal source of Agios Anargyros (sodium chloride, water temperature at 39 degrees C.) is ideal for women with arthritis and gynecological problems. The hot source Kakavou (NaCl with Fe, water temperature at 52 degrees C) is adequate to relieve dermatological diseases and those related to the nervous system. Near the tower of Loutra (Mazaraki Tower), two streams of springs come to the surface. The temperature remains stable all year long, ….Consequently, feel free to swim in this natural spa…..
3. Panagia Kanala with its beautiful church and beaches. The small village of Kanala is located near the beach of Megali Ammos, a beach sheltered by the pines of the island. The village is located 16 kms from Chora, east of the island. It took the name Panagia Kanala (protector of the island) for religious reasons. It is a village where the pilgrims arrive every year on the 15th of August to venerate a miraculous icon of the Panagia. The icon of Panagia Kanala was found by fishermen in a channel, between the island of Kythnos and Serifos, so we have the name Kanala. Every year, on the 15th of August, there is a big feast with a representation of the day of the icon’s discovery.
A beautiful island to visit …. for a quiet stay. An arid island swept by a gentle wind that will surprise you.
